Lifesaving Sport

Lifesaving sport is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. A Class II Olympic event, it is contested by the top eight nations at the World Games. It is a highly demanding multi-discipline sport with events taking place in two main arenas, the pool -Stillwater Lifesaving, and the beach and ocean -Surf Lifesaving.

Some competitors choose to specialize in specific events suited to their physique and specific fitness for example fin events (100m Carry/100m Tow), Malibu board surf specialists, Beach sprinters etc. Others are all rounders, focusing on multiple events. To be a top all rounder you must be more versatile than a decathlete and extremely fit. To make a national team you should be proficient at two or more events. As a club, our strength lies in stillwater events. We hope that in the future we can compete in Surf Lifesaving events and develop this aspect of Lifesaving in Northern Ireland.

All Stillwater events take place over a long course (50m pool) distance. They are raced in a normal swimming event format under ASA, FINA and ILS rules.
